Blarney Blast

I am always looking for a reason to party, give me a holiday and I'll make it happen.  This year for St. Patrick's Day, my friends and I decided to host Blarney Blast.  I was a simple dinner/get-together, but can I just tell you, it was a blast!!!

I spent close to 9 hours cooking a traditional Irish Dinner: Corned Beef, Guinness Stew, Irish Soda Bread, Chocolate Stout Cupcakes, and Irish Cream & Mint Chocolate Trifles {click titles for the recipes}.  Since none of us drink alcohol, we played Beer Pong with green Gatorade, listened to Irish music {and by Irish music, I mean Mumford & Sons and Flogging Molly}, and even played some Rock Band.

Since mucley arms was such a great nurse this past week, I decided to let him know how lucky I am to have him.  Growing up, my mom always did something special for each of us on every holiday, and I have really embraced that tradition.  I purchased some inexpensive Irish and green themed things {a St. Patrick's Day t-shirt, A green baseball cap, some green boxers with clovers on them, gold coin and gold nugget candy, a green self adhesive handle bar mustache, and some other small things} and placed them in a black gift bag with yellow tissue paper.

I then purchased some inexpensive construction paper and created paper chains in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple,  {making a rainbow} which I taped to a door frame.  I then placed the gift bag under the rainbow {the little pot of gold} and created a scavenger hunt which led to the rainbow using green die cut clovers with clues on the back. At our party, the most of the guests figured the clovers and rainbow were just part of the decor!  It was a quick and inexpensive gift, and he loved it!

Slow Care

They should really call the Quick Care, "Slow Care."  I stumbled in yesterday afternoon with pain so bad I could hardly breathe.  I knew the drill, "I have severe pain in my abdomen," I said, knowing that the quick care is like a game of Chutes and Ladders and "abdominal pain" is a fast pass to the front of the line.  "You've got about seven people in front of you, feel better," was all the receptionist could tell me.

Seventh?!  I was already in a poor state, but to add defeat was just cruel.  I didn't think I could make it.  I'm not exactly tough when it comes to being in pain.  I'm actually a huge wimp.  I cry, I want someone to take care of me, and I vomit... a lot, and sometimes I pass out.  I decided to embrace my pain, to really feel it, and let everyone else know I was feeling it.

I went into the co-ed/public restroom of the Slow Care waiting room.  I took off my shoes and laid down on the cold tile floor, with no regard for pee stains or germs.  About every two minutes or so, I would vomit, and then curl up into a seated position to ward off more nausea.  This position didn't help with the pain, however, in fact, it made it worse.  In between bouts of loud crying/wailing/moaning, I would crawl over to the door, open it, shout to the front desk, "is it my turn?!" and with every no, I would shut the door and repeat the process.  I'm sure the sight was truly pitiful.

I was finally called back, and begged the triage nurse for "something, anything for the pain."  Instead she gave me a pregnancy test.  My attempts at listing the myriad of reasons I knew I was not pregnant were futile and once we had the actual results, I was finally given a shot to ease the pain.  Have you ever had a shot in the bum?!  It was my first, and let me tell you, it was unpleasant!  I couldn't determine which pain I'd rather deal with, the stabbing pain in my back or the throbbing in my tush.   After about 15 minutes I felt wonderful.  I was finally able to stop crying, come out of the fetal position and allow the nurses to perform some more tests.  Diagnosis: kidney stone.

This isn't my first rodeo when it comes to kidney stones, it's my 5th.  I know all about taking it easy, and drinking lots of fluids.  It also helped that I had a really good nurse to take care of me.

"Those who understand the eternal blessings which come from the temple know that no sacrifice is too great, no price is too heavy, no struggle is too difficult in order to receive those blessings.  As we go to the Holy house of God, we will be more able to bear every trial and to overcome each temptation."

The best medicine

I love these photos my family had taken last November.  For some reason we could not stop laughing.  I'm sure the photographer was a little peeved that we didn't just hold still and smile, but we love the way they turned out.

When was the last time you experienced the rushing thrill of a deep belly laugh?  When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?  It's no secret that in any situation, laughter really is the best medicine.   After this past week, I was in desperate need of heavy duty, prescription strength laughter.  Lucky for me, last night, the doctor was in!

After work, I was faced with the extremely tough decision of studying for an exam or getting my first wax of the season.  I chose to get waxed.  Unfortunately, I was turned away because my hair was too short - which worries me.  How long is supposed to be?!  Anyway, after studying, I went to his house.  Have any of you ever had an extremely handsome new man, who is twice your size wrestle you to the ground so he could inspect your hairy armpits?!  It's so embarrassing, but truly hilarious.  I gave him a good fight, but ultimately, his muscley arms were just too strong.  Through the struggling, and screams to his roommate for assistance, I laughed and laughed until the tears came.  He caught one glimpse of my pits and pretended to throw up.  We had a grand ol' time and, with a smile, he commented that he'd never heard me laugh so hard.

I can think of only 4 times in my life where I have laughed harder, it's a good feeling!

Science has proven that laughter really is the best medicine and it's  benefits span all aspects of our well being.

Physical Benefits
Boosts immune system
Reduces stress
Releases endorphins which boost the mood
Decreases pain
Relaxes muscles
Decreases risk for heart disease

Mental Benefits
Increases resilience
Eases anxiety and fear
Relieves stress
Increases energy
Enhances concentration and productivity

Social Benefits
Strengthens relationships
Attracts others to us
Increases spontaneity
Helps diffuse negative energy from criticism or judgment

I make it a point to try to get at least one good laugh in everyday.  Sometimes that's not always possible, but I have made a conscious effort to surround myself with people who will help to foster a happy environment.  There are other things I do to help bring about laughter:

Smile.  Smiling is the beginning of laughter and like laughter, it’s contagious.

When you hear laughter, move towards it.  Sometimes humor and laughter are private, a shared joke among a small group, but usually not. More often, people are very happy to share something funny because it gives them an opportunity to laugh again and feed off the humor you find in it. When you hear laughter, seek it out and ask, “What’s funny?”

Laugh at yourself.  One of my favorite quotes of all time is, "Never be afraid to laugh at yourself, you could be missing out on the joke of the century."  Don't take life too seriously, and learn to share embarrassing moments.

Keep things in perspective.  Many things in life are beyond your control—particularly the behavior of other people.  Make it a point to laugh about it instead of complain.

The High Road

One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received after a breakup  was to "be kind."  Sometimes when things go south, feelings are hurt and it's easy to say mean things about the other person.  It's not easy to remember that they are a child of God and are doing the best with what they've been given.  Sometimes, it's not easy to be kind.

In the last year or so, I decided that if I were to die tomorrow, I want people to be able to describe me as "kind."  I constantly make an effort to avoid gossip, and insults, and to always see the good in people, even when they may not deserve it.  I feel like this has made me a better person.  This past week I've been in a total funk.  With all of the things currently going on in my personal life, I have become a target of extreme negativity.

When I've been asked about my recent breakup, I usually comment with, "he's a great guy, but we just didn't work out." End of story.  There's no need for details, it's not really anyone's business.  However, I have been dealing with unkind things being said about me.  Things that are not true are being said by people who have never met me, and don't' know a fraction of the situation.  It's hard to try to take the high road and "ignore" the name calling, the accusations and the judgments.  It's hard to not let it affect me.

It's a great day

♫ It's a great day to be alive
I know the sun is still shining when I close my eyes
There's some hard times in the neighborhood
But why can't everyday be just this good ♬

I love this song by Travis Tritt.  It's actually my morning alarm and I think that starting each day with this song helps me to have a great day.

♮ But sometimes, it's ok to have a not-so-great day.
♯ Sometimes it's ok to feel blue, and mope around, and not want to do anything
♮ Sometimes it's ok to {for the first time in my life} play the "lady troubles" card, go home from work and take a nap
♯ Sometimes it's ok to tell people exactly how I'm feeling, even if it's not pleasant
♮ Sometimes it's ok to think, tomorrow will be better

Blowing off Steam

When I showed up at his house he asked, "Whatcha got there?"

My eyes beamed from behind my aviators and a smile crept across my face.  "A gun." I said, matter-of-factly.  "And I have bullets in my purse!"

Laughter ensued and what followed turned out to be a perfect day-turned-evening-turned-night.

I hit the bullseye!
