I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts

Twiddle-lee-dee.

Recently, I've been obsessed with foods... Let me rephrase, I've always been obsessed with food, but lately I've been thinking a lot about healthier eating, organics, and browsing health inspired cookbooks.  I have not always been a healthy eater, but lately with so much news about how the processed foods we eat everyday can lead to diseases in the long run, I've started to re-evaluate my diet and began educating myself on healthy, quality nutrition.

One current health craze that has caught my attention is Coconut Water.  I first heard about this drink while reading in a magazine that Salma Hayek is a "huge fan."  I read the benefits, and decided I had to try this miracle drink.

Couldn't find the pic with Salma, so Giselle & Rhianna will have to do

So, what were those benefits?

1. One cup of coconut water contains a measly 46 calories {less than a glass of Orange Juice}.  It's 99% fat free and low in sugar meaning, it can help you loose weight, and is perfect for bikini season.

2. One cup of coconut water contains a surprisingly high 3 grams of dietary fibre, 2 grams of protein and zero cholesterol.

3. Coconut water is a great source of potassium (ie: electrolytes), even better than a banana and more nutritious than whole milk.

4. While coconuts are only in season for a short time, you can get access to coconut water all year long.

5. Coconut water helps to build circulation.

6. Coconut water hydrates better than sports drinks, and helps your body keep cool, great for summertime heat.

7. Drinking this beverage can help reduce the risk of cancer.

8. It’s naturally sterile (I'm not sure why this is important)

Looking for something to replace a large quantity of my Pepsi consumption, I decided there were two ways I could try this stuff:

First, I could go to my grocery store, buy a coconut, crack it open, and enjoy.  However, in elementary school my brothers and I tried to do this, and let me just say, coconuts do not crack as readily in real life as they do on TV.  I think we finally got it open after 30 minutes, and a hammer and a screwdriver were involved; and the "milk" spilled everywhere.

Secondly, I could buy a "box" of it.  Since this stuff has become so trendy, I found it at CVS, of all places, for $2.00.

I must admit, was half expecting it to tasted like the virgin PiƱa Colodas I enjoyed on my cruise, but coconut water is made from the "milk" of young, still-green coconuts.  It tasted a little bit like milky-coco-nutty-flavored water, with emphasis on milky-water and nutty.  While it has amazing health benefits, I'm not sure I could stand to drink all 11 oz.  Wah wah wah.  Over all I'd give it ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆  My opinion may also be a bit skewed, because I tried it after consuming a delicious Sunrise Sunet from Tropical Smoothie, so maybe my tastebuds were a little off...

Have you tried this stuff?  What did you think of it?

  2. It's funny you posted this, just last week I bought a box to try and it's been sitting in my fridge all week because I'm too afraid to try it!

I've heard that coconut water/milk can be used like IV fluid if needed.. so maybe that's what it means that it's sterile. I'm not a coconut fan at all so I'm gonna just stick to Diet Coke. :)
